A comic culture clash ensues after scatty grandparents Artie and Diane step in to look after their daughter Alice’s three children for a few days in Parental Guidance. Billy Crystal’s Artie has just been fired from his job as a minor league baseball announcer; Bette Midler’s Diane used to be a singing weather girl on TV. Unsurprisingly, when it comes to child rearing both are wildly at odds with the control-freaky, sugar-free, mollycoddling 21st-century parenting practised by daughter Marisa Tomei and son-in-law Tom Everett Scott. The film’s gags are predictable and fairly lame, but the stars’ diehard fans will enjoy Crystal’s snarky one-liners and, yes, Midler’s singing.
